Bodh Gaya

Wandering prince Siddhartha sat under a tree for meditation and became enlightened. From there he travelled various places preaching the principles of Buddhism he started. Later came to be known as “Gautam Buddha “ or “Lord Buddha”, it was here at “Bodh Gaya” under the Bodhi Tree he became enlightened. Situated in Bihar, it is one of the most important places of pilgrim for Buddhists.  This beautiful small town is situated on the river Lilanjan River (also known as Neranjara). With rich history monks from all over the world visit Bodh Gaya. Surrounding the city are hills and caves making this small historical town even more mesmerizing.

The main temple in Body Gaya is Mahabodhi temple. The temple complex has a massive Buddha statue in a sitting posture. Monks and pilgrims sit in the foot of this humongous statue of Buddha, which is one of the main highlights of the temple. Along with these temples, there are dozens of monasteries in the city.

Location: Bodh Gaya is about 12 km from Gaya City. The NH83 Highway connects Gaya and Bodhgaya.

How to reach:

By Air: Nearest Airport to Bodh Gaya is Gaya Airport which is 13kms from the city center. Taxi charges about Rs.250 from airport to Bodh Gaya.

By Rail: Gaya Junction is 13 kms from Bodh Gaya. Taxi is available for approximately Rs.300 from railway station to Bodh Gaya.

By Road: Regular buses ply from Patna to Bodh Gaya. There are various buses available Gaya, Nalanda, Patna, Varanasi and Rajgir.

It’s not only the Mahabodhi Temple that is to be seen. There are other monasteries which are built around the main temple by various Buddhist countries. Some of the must temples are Animesh Lochana Chaitya, Cankamana Temple, Chinese Temple, Indosan Nippon Japanese temple, Ratnaghara, Royal Bhutan Monastery, Thai Monsatery and Vietnamese Temple. Some of the popular historical places to visit are Ajapala Nigrodha Temple, Great Buddha Statue, Rajayatna Tree and The Bodhi Tree. For nature lovers Muchalinda Lake is a must visit.

Local Food: Food in Bodh Gaya is simple and basic. Various cuisines ranging from Indian to Continental to Chineses to Thai are available in the cafes and restaurants.
