Weekend destination: Karnala

One of the most popular weekend getaways for Mumbaikars, Karnala is a paradise for nature lovers. Just 47 kilometres from Mumbai, Karnala boasts of a historic fort, a bird sanctuary and breathtaking natural vistas.

Karnala is situated at a distance of about 10 km from Panvel. The two major attractions for tourists here are the Karnala Bird Sanctuary and the Karnala Fort.

The Karnala Fort – It is of much historical significance as it overlooked the Bor Pass, which connects the Konkan coast to the interior districts of Maharashtra. The Karnala fort consists of two forts – one at a higher level than the other. In the centre of the fort situated on the higher level, there is a watchtower called the Pandu’s tower. It offers stunning views of the surrounding hills and valleys. The tower also has a water cistern that provides water throughout the year.

Karnala Bird Sanctuary – Popular among birdwatchers, this bird sanctuary is spread over 12 square kilometres around the Karnala Fort. The sanctuary is home to about 150 species of resident and 37 species of migratory birds. The reserve also has a number of rare bird species such as Ashy minivet, three toes kingfisher and Malabar Trogon.

About Shreya Chaudhury

First of all, if you are going to use incorrect grammar, steer clear of Shreya Chaudhury. A proper grammar Nazi, a hardcore music enthusiast (never seen without her headphones), a professional baarat dancer and a die hard Jeffrey Archer fan, you will probably find this 17 year old with a novel in hand, day dreaming about all these places she wants to travel in the future. If only time machines worked..
