Lakshadweep

Lakshadweep which means “one hundred thousand islands” is situated barely 250 km off the coast of Cochin. Beautiful Blue clear seas, white sands and brilliant sunsets-Lakshadweep is an idyllic island getaway in India. The islands are a perfect amalgamation of highly fragile coral eco-systems, breathtaking landscape and adventurous water sports.

The Lakshadweep archipelago consists of 36 islands, coral reefs, coral atolls and other smaller islands. If exploring nature is what you like the most then the Coral Reefs at Lakshadweep are picturesque beauty for a laidback holiday with blissful climatic conditions. The best time to visit the islands is anytime between August to mid May.

Kalpeni, situated on the north is surrounded by scintillating lagoons is famous for its scenic natural beauty and islets called Tilakkam and Pitti. Three uninhabited satellite islands of Kalpeni, are surrounded by rich lagoon in coral life. Kalpeni is also a treat for water-sports lover with sports like snorkeling, kayaking and reef walking.

Minicoy, another island in the archipelago is the southernmost island. Known for its rick colorful cultures having essence of Maldives is a unique island in itself. The most magnificent lighthouse built in 1885 by the British is a must visit for the tourists there.

Kadmat, another island is a treat for tourists looking for serenity and peace. Known for its outstanding marine life and large lagoons is enclosed by coral reefs.

Best way to know a place is meeting the local people. With small population on these islands people are warm and friendly. 90 per cent of the population in these islands is Muslim and engage in fishing and tourism activities.

Cherry on the cake for any trip is FOOD. As the islands are in close proximity to Kerala, the cuisines reflect the Indian taste. Island dishes out variety of spicy sea-food to healthy vegetarian delicacies with great amount of coconut in every dish.

Here is a word of caution when visiting these islands. Drinking of alcohol is prohibited in apart from Bangaram. Plucking or causing any damage to Flora or Fauna is punishable by law. Be safe and not litter the beautiful islands.
