The history of this park dates back to 4th century BC. This park has undergone many naming ceremonies and is today known as the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. With an area of 104 sq.km it is located in Maharastra, India; this expanse of lush greenery is often called as ‘hub of oxygen’ in the hustle-bustle city of Mumbai. It claims to be one of the most visited parks in the world attracting 2 million visitors per year.
Botany lovers can find over 2000 plant species here. The 50000 species of insects are a feast for entomologists. Bird lovers can often be found here as it is a hub for about 250 species of migratory birds. Wildlife includes leopards, cheetahs, spotted deers, cobras, pythons etc.
Apart from the wildlife, enthusiasts can also go for tiger safari, lion safari, nature trails, mountain treks, a toy-train round of the park and even boating. The nearby Kanheri caves which was once a learning centre for Buddhists monks is also a tourist attraction.
This bustling forest can be visited anytime in the year, though I would suggest early monsoon-period. There is something magical here for everyone!
