Back in early 1930’s, the Maharaja of Mysore was not aware that hunting was illegal! Yes, the then named Venugopal Wildlife Park, was his private hunting land.
This 874 sq km park which came to being in the 70’s is today called, the Bandipur National Park. It is located in Karnataka, India, where the Deccan Plateau meets the Western Ghats. Bandipur National Park is significant because of the ‘Nilgiri Bioshpere Reserve’, India’s biggest biosphere. Hence, it occupies a special place in India’s Eco-Conservation.
With a rich supply of water from Kabini, Moyar and Nugu rivers this park is rich in diverse flora and fauna. It has a Tiger Reserve along with endangered species of Asian elephants. The 200 species of birds includes red-headed vultures, peafowl crested eagles etc. It is a home for a rare collection of butterflies, ants and beetles. Timber trees like teakwood, sandalwood; flowering trees like flame of the forest, golden shower tree grow here abundantly.
