A renowned Microsoft engineer Blaise Agüera y Arcas who was key member in developing Microsoft’s Bing Maps service and its image-stitching Photosynth software, leaves the company to join search-engine giant Google.
According to the New York Times Agüera y Arcas will work on machine learning at Google, on which he has been extensively working for Microsoft along with the research teams. The decision of Arcas’s Google association will definitely fuel the ongoing rivalry between the two companies.
Agüera y Arcas who joined Microsoft in 2006, has said leaving Microsoft is “the hardest decision of my life”. He also thanked Microsoft management for supporting him.
“(Microsoft) Leadership has been consistently good to me over these past eight years, and it has been a time filled with creativity and growth and good friends,” Agüera y Arcas said.
“It’s painful to leave behind so many wonderful ongoing projects, and even more so to leave behind such a great team,” he added.
A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed the news.
“He was a great colleague and we wish him the best in his future endeavors,” the spokesperson said.
