Pakistani militia Lashkar-e-Taiba operations commander and the 26/11 Mumbai attack mastermind Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi walked out free from a Pakistani jail after spending nearly six years in detention, on Friday.
Lakhvi was released from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, a day later the Lahore High Court(LHC) suspended his detention orders and ordered for his immediate acquisition. The trial had been doing rounds since 2009.
Supporters of Lakhvi from the Jamaat-ud-Dawa were present outside the prison to receive the leader.
The court cancelled the Punjab government’s immediate order to keep Lakhvi imprisoned under one of the security acts and ordered for his immediate release on Thursday.
Earlier on Friday, Raja Rizwan Abbasi, Lakhvi’s counsel had said that the government was left with no other ‘legal option’ but to immediately release his client. This, however, has left the Indian government and its citizens uproaring.
Lakhvi and his six other associates have been charged with planning and executing the 2008 Mumbai attack that incurred lives of around166 people and leaving several others wounded. Lakhvi, a close relative of LeT founder and JuD chief Hafiz Saeed, had been arrested in December 2008 and was indicted along with the others on November 25, 2009.
