The two-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray suffered a shocking quarter final loss in the US Open when the ninth-seeded Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka defeated him 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 in straight sets. While it was Murray’s earliest exit in any of the Grand Slams in the last 13 months, his loss on Thursday night ended Wawrinka’s long wait for a semi final appearance in a Grand Slam.
Andy Murray, who ended Britain’s 77-year long wait for a winner in Wimbledon, their own tournament few days back, reached the quarter-finals of this edition of the US Open without any major scare but his display on the court clearly lacked some real spark. His recent dip in form was once again made evident when he conceded a 40-0 lead in his own serve with five weak serves which Wawrinka made capital of, taking the break and consequently the set. Murray was so much frustrated at his own display that he smashed his racket on the turf only to se it getting deformed.
On the other hand, Wawrinka played some cool tennis as he held his nerves when it mattered most. On his way to such a comprehensive victory he made very little mistakes and never faced a break point on his own serve throughout the match, as he ruled supreme over a depleted Murray. After the match he also got a congratulatory message from his compatriot Roger Federer as the ecstatic Wawrinka said that it was his moment to celebrate.
The ninth-seeded Wawrinka is now lined up for a face-off with the world no. 1 Novak Djokovic who stormed into the semis wiping out 21st seed Russian Mikhail Youghzny with a super display of tennis at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. A mouth-watering semi-final clash between Murray-slayer Wawrinka and top-seed Novak Djokovic is on the cards when they meet at the Flushing Meadows for the first semi-final.
