The latest star to become a member of the family of Indian cricket is the Star India Pvt. Ltd. as they bought the sponsorship rights of the logo in the Team India jersey on Monday. The Star group took away the sponsorship rights ahead of the Sahara Group who sponsored Team India since 2002. The contract will come into effect from January 1, 2014 and will stay till March 31, 2017.
The Star India Pvt. Ltd. is entitled to pay an amount of Rs. 1.92cr for any BCCI match and Rs. 61 lakh for any ICC match, according to the new contract. Reports suggest that BCCI has rejected Sahara’s bid of renewing the terms in spite of suffering financial loss, which brings into limelight the bitter relationship between BCCI and Sahara owner Subrata Roy. However the emergence of Star India Parivar in the field of cricket has brought an end to a 12-year long relationship of BCCI and Sahara and is set to script a new phase in Indian cricket. Incidentally Star also currently holds the rights of telecasting every single match played in India. This new contract of Team India sponsorship will strengthen the bonding between the two associations.
