Records tumbled as Germany toyed with Brazil

It was more than just a nightmare for the Brazilians as they found their nation being floored by a rampant German side by 7 goals. There will be sleepless nights for the Brazilians from now on. But having settled for such a scoreline Germany also gave a tough time to the statisticians. Every now and then there were possibilities of setting a new record.

It all began with Miroslav Klose’s first goal in the match and Germany’s second. With that goal Klose became the holder of the record for most Germany beat Brazil 7-1number of goals in world cup finals. He could not have chosen a better stage for breaking the old record set by Brazilian Ronaldo. With last night’s goal Klose now has scored 16 goals in world cup finals and he bettered Ronaldo’s tally of 15 goals which he set in the 2002 world cup final against Germany. Also Klose holds the record for most number of goals (71) in German colours.

The first semi final of the 2014 FIFA World Cup produced 8 goals which itself is a new record. Previously the 1958 semi final produced 7 goals (Brazil 5-France 2) and the 1954 semi final between Germany and Austria produced 7 goals in which the scoreline was 6-1 in favour of the Germans. In this goal fest, the home team saw themselves conceding as many as 7 goals while scoring only 1.

Germany now holds the record for most number of goals scored in world cup finals. Brazil now has 220 goals beside their name while Germany has got 221. Not only that Thomas Mueller when he scored the night’s first goal became the third player after Cubilas and compatriot Miroslav Klose to score 5 or more goals in two different world cup games. Now that’s also a record worth having.

Few records were also broken but the Brazilians would love to forget that as early as possible. It was their first defeat in 62 matches in their own backyard and the last time they were beaten in their home ground was against Peru that too back in 1975. 39 years on they were yet to lose a single match. Germany made them taste how it feels to lose in the semi final mueller scores against brazil in semifinalof a world cup on home soil. Their humiliation was not yet over as the 7-1 drubbing by Germany became their worst defeat in their history of football. Their previous worst defeat came against Uruguay in 1920 in Chile when Uruguay got 6 past the Brazilian defense.

Keeping in mind that records are made to be broken it can be said that Miroslav Klose may not get the chance of cherishing his feat of becoming the top scorer in world cup for long. This is because he is chased by his teammate Thomas Mueller who has already got 10 goals in his two world cup appearances and he is just 23 years old. But until he gets to that landmark, Klose must cherish for what he has achieved in his under-rated career.
