Australian Open 2014 is finally set to witness the biggest clash till now when Andy Murray will be playing against 4-time champion and former world number 1 Roger Federer in the quarterfinal. Both the players won their third round matches with quite ease. Federer, in particular, looked to be in sublime touch, while Murray also looked quite good on the court.
Murray won his third round match against Stephane Robert with a score of 6-1, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2. Murray had it easy in the first two sets as he won them in less than an hour. The 34-year old unseeded Frenchman was down and dusted as he had no answer to Murray’s superb ground play. However, there was suddenly a change in Robert’s game and he played with more intent in the third set. Such was his determination that he saved 6 match points to come back from one break down and grab the set 7-6 (6) in the tie-breaker. But it could not change his fate by a lot. It just delayed the inevitable as Murray played with more calmness to win the fourth set 6-2. Murray finally could breathe easy having reached the quarterfinal of the tournament. But he became the first among the big fishes in the tournament to drop a set.
Following Murray’s match, it was Federer’s turn to reach the quarterfinal of the tournament and he did it in style. The Swiss maestro took just 1 hour and 52 minutes to see off his third round opponent Jo-Wilfred Tsonga in straight sets. The final score read 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 in favour of the number 6 seed. Federer was at his best at the Rod Laver Arena as he simply gave no chance to the 10th seeded Frenchman at all.
Thus we have an intriguing match in our hand when Murray and Federer face each other in the quarters of the Australian Open 2014. Murray might have won on last few occasions against Federer but this time round it will not be that easy for Murray as the Swiss master looking a lot different than the last season.
