Leicester City stun Manchester United; City hold Chelsea to a stalemate

There was no lack of action in England on the Sunday afternoon as the spectators got their money’s worth at the stadium. At first it was at the home ground of Leicester City where Manchester United gave a 2-goal lead not once but twice to end up on the losing side for the second time in this year’s Premier League. Manchester City on the other hand managed to escape defeat as they scored late to snatch one point from league leader Chelsea.

Frank LampardAt Lancashire, Manchester United made a rocking start to the match when robin Van Persie opened the scoring for the visitors in the 13th minute. Angel Di Maria doubled it 3 minutes later with an excellent chip over the keeper. Leicester responded very quickly and reduced the margin in the 17th minute. It ended 2-1 at the break. The second half started almost in a similar fashion with United restoring their 2-goal advantage when Ander Herrera flicked in a shot from distance. And that was it. Leicester made a dream comeback as they scored 4 goals in a span of just 20 minutes to lead 5-3 in the match. United had their central back Tyler Blackett sent off for a challenge from behind inside the penalty which eventually led to the 5th goal from the spot. This defeat, second in this edition of the tournament, saw Manchester United drop down to the bottom half and their blistering performance against QPR now appears to be a false storm for the defense needs to improve a lot.

Manchester City however survived a scare from the last year’s runners-up as they scored late to manage one point and stay close to the top spot in the league table. Chelsea missed the opportunity to extend their lead over potential title contender Manchester City for they failed to hold on to a 1-goal advantage even after having their opponents down to 10 men. Andre Schurrle scored the goal for the visitors just after the home side had Zabaleta sent off with a second yellow. City, who were enjoying an upperhand in the match till that moment, suddenly lost their momentum and Chelsea took that chance and struck with a nice attack from the right. However it was the former Chelsea man Frank Lampard who restored parity for the home team with less than 10 minutes left.

It was an intriguing end to this weekend’s Barclay’s English Premier League as there were lots of ups and downs in the table. It promises a lot for the upcoming days as the lesser known teams have stunned the giants and we have had a number of upsets. This has just lifted the mercury level by a notch.
