ICC removed Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf from the panel of umpires for the upcoming Champions Trophy in England after media reports Rauf’s alleged role in the IPL spot-fixing scandal.
Mumbai Police is reportedly investigating Asad Rauf’s role in the spot-fixing scam.
In a press release ICC on Thursday said it had withdrawn Rauf from the panel of umpires for Champions Trophy which will be started from June 6.
“The decision has been made after media reports on Wednesday indicated that the umpire was under investigation by Mumbai Police,” the ICC media release said.
Explaining the decision, ICC Chief Executive David Richardson said, “In the wake of reports that the Mumbai Police are conducting an investigation into Asad Rauf’s activities, we feel that it is in Asad’s best interests as well as those of the sport and the event itself, that he is withdrawn from participating in the ICC Champions Trophy.”
According to some media channels, Vindu Dara Singh reportedly told police that Asad Rauf had taken ‘gifts’ from a bookie.
