It was finally a world cup final victory for Deutschland as they edged past 1-0 in a tense and tight world cup final. Germany as a unified nation won it for the first time for their all three previous triumphs were as West Germany. And none could deny that they are the deserved champions.
After thrashing Brazil in the semis, it could be predicted that Germany were clear favourites in the final against Argentina, but Argentina always have Messi in their playing eleven, who needs only one moment to turn the game on its head. However nothing as such happened- neither Germany had an easy outing nor the argentines could find their golden boy showing any sort of magic on the field and it was really tense in the middle. The first half of the match had everything a final should have. There were missed opportunities, goal rejected due to off-side, ball hitting the post-everything. But in the end neither team could break the deadlock as it was even-steven at half time. The second half saw both teams playing for safety and denied to make any mistake. the German defense led by Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels handled everything with confidence to deny any space or a sniff at the goal to the argentine forward line comprised of Messi, Aguero and Palacios. And it stayed 0-0 even after 90 minutes.
The first half of extra-time began with a bang as Germany’s Andre Schuerrle pulled off a good save from Sergio Romero. On the other side of the pitch Manuel Neuer also had to make important saves to keep Germany in hunt for the trophy. And finally came, perhaps, the biggest moment of this world cup. Schuerrle made a sharp run down the left and floated in a great ball for Mario Goetze whop came in for Miroslav Klose few minutes back. Goetze’s receiving was excellent and his finish was even better when he put the ball past Romero and into the back of the net. It was 1-0 to Germany and with less than 10 minutes left it seemed that Germany were set for the fourth world cup title. It was a cool finish from Goetze and what a run down the left from promising Andre Schuerrle to fed Mario with such a cross with few minutes left.
As the final whistle went off, Joachim Loew’s expression said it all. It was not an ecstatic outburst but a calm expression of satisfaction from the German coach. And it showed how much it meant for him and his countrymen. For a nation who had come very close to the title on number of occasions it was finally the night for them to cherish.
Argentina on the other hand will have to wait for the next edition of the tournament which is going to be held in Russia in 2018. Till then Messi will have to remain happy with the Golden Ball award for becoming the best player in the tournament.
