It was a landmark night for the Colombians as they reached the quarters of the World Cup for the first time in their history. They got the better of Uruguay on the night and emerged winners by 2-0 to set up a quarterfinal clash with the hosts.
It was very much even-steven when Uruguay and Colombia kicked off the second match of the pre-quarter and find a place in the last 8. As the match moved on, it was Colombia who earned the edge with better passing. And they deservedly took the lead in the 28th minute when James Rodriguez’s schemer went in after hitting the inside of the cross-bar beating the Uruguayan keeper Fernando Muslera. The goal came from nowhere and suddenly Colombia found them in the lead. Uruguay who was without their star striker Luis Suarez, tried to make a quick comeback but failed to get any clear chance although they finished the half on a high.
With the start of the second half it was Colombia who doubled the lead. James Rodriguez was up to it again. But it was a perfect team goal for which Rodriguez got the credit. Colombia display brilliant piece of passing football before making it 2-0. And Rodriguez now has 5 goals beside his name, 1 more than Messi, Neymar and Mueller. Uruguay tried hard. But it was not just happening for them. Diego Forlan was just a shadow of what we have known him for. Also Cavani did no justice to his name. In the end it was Colombia who got the better of Uruguay with perfect team game supported well by the new star James Rodriguez.
Colombia’s 2-0 victory means that they will face the five-time world champion Brazil in the quarter final. That is now a huge ask for the Colombians. Yet you can’t predict anything, at least in this world cup. Who knows we may have something special waiting for us.
