Brazil gets the taste of German blitzkrieg

The stage was set for an intriguing battle between the two powerhouses of world football. But it turned out to be a totally one-sided affair. Even the term one-sided is an under statement for Brazil defense was reduced to dust Germany beat Brazil 7-1in the opening 30 minutes of the match. In the end it was 7-1. Yes it’s 7-1. No it’s not a scoreline of any hockey match or a tie-breaker in any of the sets in a lawn tennis match. It’s the scoreline of a Brazil-Germany world cup semi final match. Few German fans who were present at Belo Horizonte    went crazy- well the question is whether that was in belief or disbelief. For what the world of football saw last night was simply mesmerizing on behalf of the German fans and heart-breaking, to say the least, for the innumerable Brazilian supporters both inside and outside the country.

Coming into the match it is better not to utter much regarding the display of football by the 10 Brazilian players on the field. Few would say that they had come to play a semi final in world cup because most of them were in a mood to enjoy the ambiance and in the process even destroy that by conceding 5 goals in a span of 18 minutes. It all began in the 11th minute Germany beat Brazil in semifinalwhen an unmarked Thomas Mueller scored from a corner. The second one came in the 23rd minute when Miroslav Klose scored on second attempt. Toni Kroos made it 3-0 within seconds of restart volleying in from 15 yards. Before the third goal had sunk in, Kroos scored his second on the night and Germany’s 4th. Sami Khedira then made it 5-0 in the 29th minute. Such was condition of the Brazilian defense that the German players were just running out of scorers. They were actually among themselves to score a goal. The defense was in complete disarray, had it existed in the first place though. David Luiz, Marcelo, Dante- each and every player in the Brazilian defense looked like amateurs. And it seemed that the Germans were playing FIFA on PC in amateur level. Even a computer game fails to produce 4 goals in 6 minutes and when it happens in real football you must be watching something horrifying as well as special (for either set of fans).

davidluizReuters_2xIt did not change much in the second half although Brazil had pulled off three excellent saves from Manuel Neuer in space of 10 minutes after the restart of the match. Germany was looking a bit complacent. But it did not last for long. Andre Schuerrle came on for Miroslav Klose and he became the latest to find a place in the score sheet when he side footed the ball in the 69th minute. The host’s defenders were mere spectators for this time too. Schuerrle then made it 7-0 in the 82nd minute when his screamer found the back of the net after hitting the underside of the framework. Just before finishing the humiliation Brazil scored their only goal and Oscar was the scorer. The German defense suddenly made a lapse in concentration and Oscar made use of that opportunity to thump in the only Brazilian goal of the night.

Finally it was the end of the humiliation to say the least. Both the German fans and the Brazilian supporters were in utter disbelief, both for opposite reasons though. The home crowd booed and barracked the players whom they were worshipping few days back, even 90 minutes back. The immediate target was Fred who did not deserve to be in the reserve bench Brazil Reactsof the Brazilian team. It was great to see the Brazilians appreciating the German passing game and for me that was the biggest moment of the match. It showed the world that whoever plays well gets the due respect from the Brazilians. After all they are the born to celebrate football. But what after happened in the semis, it will be hard for the men in Blue and Yellow to forget in recent future. Even if they manage to do so, say after a long time (don’t know how long will that be), this scar will remain forever.
