Australia won the toss and elected to bat first at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday. Debutant Moises Henriques scored 68 under pressure and put 151 runs partnership with Clarke and rescue Australia after they struck at 153 for loss of 5 wickets.
Ashwin took six wickets for 88.
Cheteshwar Pujara took a simple bat-pad catch when Clark was batting on 39 at forward short-leg but umpire Kumar Dharmasena turned down the appeal.
