The states of Assam and West Bengal have begun with their pollings from today. Sixty-five assembly constituencies out of the total 126 in the north-eastern state have gone to the polls from today, that shall be deciding the political fate of the 539 candidates contesting, including local leaders as well as some high-profile dignitaries like the current Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and the BJP’s Chief Ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal.
The neighbouring state of Bengal too, has the polls in 18 of its constituencies. Thirteen of the areas have been identified as extremist-prone causing them to be ‘sensitive’, with the voting process ending at 4 p.m.
This is being named as the first mega phase in a larger season, wherein a total of five States shall be having the elections.
The stakes are high for key national and regional players. According to the available information, the ruling party BJP has a high possibility of coming back to power only in Assam, where it had formed an alliance with the Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front. Meanwhile, there are talks about Trinamool Congress coming back to power in Bengal.
