Sunday witnessed America’s most devastating attack after 9/11, as an American-born man opened fire and shot dead about fifty people at midnight, in a gay nightclub in Orlando.
The 29-year-old man has been identified as Omar Mateen, who belonged to the Fort Pierce area in Florida and was under suspicion previously. He was, in fact, interviewed by the FBI back in 2013 and 2014, but was let go since no evidence could be found against him, the FBI stated.
He carried an assault rifle and a pistol into the super-crowded ‘Pulse’ club, a place specially meant for gays, and began with his rampant shooting that claimed several lives and injured many. He then called 9/11 and vowed his allegiance to the ISIS, by further mentioning about the Boston Marathon bombers, according to an official.
About some three hours later, the police barged in with heavy ammunition that eventually rendered Mateen dead. There has, however, been no claim of responsibility for the mayhem on the militant portals, but a text in Arabic on a dark web site that has been linked to the ISIS news agency Amaq, stated that “the armed attack that targeted a gay night club in the city of Orlando in the American state of Florida and that bore more than a 100 killed and wounded was carried out by an Islamic state fighter.”
When contacted, Mateen’s ex-wife expressed shock and claimed he had been mentally disturbed.
Survivors broke down as they provided their horrific accounts and close encounters with death. Major leaders worldwide have condemned the attack with nations mourning in grief and rising in sympathy for the victims.
