The Congress leaders based their attack on the recent events of intolerance across the country
Delhi: The Congress, on Saturday trained its eyes on Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the BJP, who was on his way back from a state visit to the UK. The mother-son power pair called the premier a ‘dictator’, one trying to disguise his communal intentions beneath the mask of development. The leaders have based their accusal on recent acts of religious intolerance in the country, specifically the Dadri lynching and the Dalit killing in Haryana.
Congress President, Sonia Gandhi, commented, “Today, we are witnessing attempts by certain individuals and elements to whitewash their communal agenda in front of the world by hiding it behind the mask of development. Development is used as a buzzword, again and again. It is ironic that they speak of development yet fail to learn from the legacy and lessons of the man synonymous with laying the foundation of India’s growth-Nehruji.”
Meanwhile, the Congress Vice President, Rahul Gandhi, talked about the Prime Minister’s address in the UK recently, wherein he talked about the widespread issue of communalism. Said Gandhi, “When he is abroad, he says India is tolerant and that the government wants to bring all sections together but he says nothing of this sort when he is in India. Prime Minister is silent when dalit children are killed in Haryana or when someone is killed in the name of religion in Dadri.” The Gandhis’ attack blamed the BJP, RSS and Modi of being a single force towards ‘unilateralism’.
Moreover, the Congress leaders were critical of Modi’s lack of participation in the Parliament and his ignorance of issues raised by the Opposition therein. In that light, they compared this behaviour to Nehru’s pro bono work in the government. Former Prime Minister of India also joined in the verbal attack, alleging that innocent people are being hurt brutally in ‘a prevalent atmosphere of intolerance’, while creating propaganda about the make-believe development agenda. Said the strangely aggressive former PM, “Our Prime Minister talks of development. Wherever he goes, he tries to promote himself in the name of development.
A series of accusations that took stage at the celebrations of the 125th birth anniversary of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, the speeches also referred to the massive victory of the Grand Alliance in Bihar against the crushed BJP.
