The Supreme Court has said that India needs a more stringent Juvenile Justice Act against heinous crimes.
Just last week Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi has said juveniles who are accused of terrible crimes including rape should be treated as the adults and not let go easily.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday said, “You can’t have a cut-off date for crime like you have for government jobs.”
The apex court has asked government to review the juvenile act and make necessary changes.
Citing the police reports, Maneka Gandhi earlier said that 50 percent of all sexual crimes were committed by “16-year-olds who know the Juvenile Justice Act so they can do it.”
“But now for premeditated murder, rape, if we bring them into the purview of the adult world, then it will scare them,” she had told reporters.
She said her ministry has been reviewing all possible amendments to bring the changes in the law.
