In its landmark judgement today the Supreme Court has ruled that they Indian bureaucrats must get a fixed minimum tenure in posting. It comes as a great relief to the bureaucrats who are working under day to day political pressure.
“Fixed tenure of bureaucrats will promote professionalism, efficiency and good governance. Much of the deterioration in the functioning of bureaucracy is due to political interference,” the SC said.
Justice KS Radhakrishnan bench also suggested reforms in the functioning of bureaucracy and asked Parliament to enforce a law to regulate postings, transfers and disciplinary action against bureaucrats in three months.
The SC also said that bureaucrats should not act on verbal orders given by political leaders and should record in writing the oral instruction given by them.
