In his first ever interview with foreign press since he assume office, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the patriotism of Indian Muslims could not be questioned.
“Indian Muslims will live for India, they will die for India — they will not want anything bad for India,” Modi said.
Modi ruled out that Indian Muslims will join and create al-Qaida in India as the head al-Qaida of appealed through a video.
In an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, Modi said, “My understanding is that they are doing injustice towards the Muslims of our country. If anyone thinks Indian Muslims will dance to their tune, they are delusional.”
Narendra Modi remarks, meanwhile, sparked strong political reactions in India. While BJP has praised Modi’s remarks, Congress criticised him. Many Muslim leaders clerics have loud Modi’s statement.
“Indian Muslims don’t need a certificate from anyone. Modi saying this as he is going to US where he was keen to get a visa. There is sizeable Muslim population in US,” said Congress spokesperson Sandeep Dikshit.
“We welcome what PM Modi has said. PM’s remarks are a reply to those accusing us of love jihad. PM’s remarks are a reply to those trying to create a rift,” said cleric Mufti Mukarram.
“He has mentioned this to us in the past. I am glad that he is now speaking in public. It will prevent young Muslim boys from falling in ISIS, Al Qaeda trap. Its laughable if opposition and critics are still labeling Modi as anti-Muslim,” Union Minister of Minority Affairs Najma Heptullah said.
