Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today inaugurated country’s first all women bank – Bharatiya Mahila Bank in the famous Air India building at Nariman Point in Mumbai. The first branch of Bharatiya Mahila Bank is to start its operation at 5,000 sq ft area on the ground floor.
Along with the Prime Minister, Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Finance Minister P.Chidambaram were present at the inaugural ceremony.
The finance minister said that from today, the board of directors of the bank would be a 8-member all-women board which starts its function with capital base of Rs 1,000 crore.
According to Chidambaram Bharatiya Mahila Bank is initially started with seven branches in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, and Lucknow. The branch in Delhi and Indore will open next year along with 16 new branches in next four months.
