At least 15 people are feared dead and over 100 are trapped in a landslide in Bhimshankar village near Pune in Maharashtra.
The initial reports suggest that the incident happened after an entire hillside came crashing down due to heavy rain. Authorities said they fear for more casualties.
Seven teams of National Disaster Response Force are on their way. Also state rescuers along with police and medical teams have reached the spot.
Alok Avasthy, Commandmant NDRF, said, “The Pune District Collector gave the information of major landslide at 10:45 AM. Around 40 houses and 150 people are feared to be trapped under the debris.”
Divisional Commissioner Prabhakar Deshmukh told a news channel that the rescue mission itself is a challenge due to its remoteness.
“Rescue operation will speed up once the NDRF teams reach. The area is 15-20 km from the nearest medical facility.”
