Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was convicted in 18-year-old disproportionate case. She was awarded with 4-year jail term along with 100-crore fine.
After the Bangalore Court convicted her as guilty in corruption charge, the 66-year-old Jayalalithaa has no other choice but to step down from her post.
The case was originally filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy in which he alleged that Jayalalithaa possessed disproportionate assets of over 66 crores including 2,000 acres of land, 30 kg of gold and 12,000 saris.
In his first reaction Swamy told a TV channel, “I feel vindicated…she cannot recover from this loss of credibility,”
“This verdict is tribute to our system,” he added.
NCP leader Tariq Anwar said, “With this decision, the court has proved that nobody is above law.”
Several companies and shops shut down their offices in Chenani and other parts of Tamil Nadu, anticipating violent clash.
AIADMK supporters have gathered outside Subramanian Swamy’s house in Chennai and started throwing stones and pebbles at his house. Some AIADMK cadres launched violent protest outside DMK chief M Karunanidhi’s house.
Meanwhile, Jayalalithaa and her party now have to nominate someone as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in emergency basis.
