Amidst huge applause Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif shook hands and smiled for the cameras at the SAARC summit on Thursday. With this historic handshake the animosity between the two heads for last two days ends and all eight countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) have finally reached to a last-minute deal to create a regional electricity grid.
“India is for peaceful ties with Pakistan. We want meaningful dialogue. If this handshake leads to that, we would welcome it. However the emphasis is on meaningful dialogue,” Syed Akbaruddin, spokesperson for External Affairs said later.
Earlier Indian foreign ministry informed reporters that PM Modi and PM Sharif had “exchanged greetings and pleasant courtesies” at a Retreat outside Kathmandu.
