The Congress has announced former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan’s candidature from Nanded.
It was surprised decision from Congress as its Vice-President Rahul Gandhi who was trying to project himself as anti-corruption crusader had earlier said that the party would not field any “tainted” leaders for the upcoming 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
Ashok Chavan who was named in the Adarsh housing scam, expressed his happiness after receiving the ticket.
“My conscience is clear, I have done no wrong. I have not been convicted or barred from contesting elections,” Ashok Chavan told NDTV.
BJP criticised Rahul Gandhi for adjusting tainted leaders in the party and giving out tickets to fight the Lok Sabha Polls,
“We have answered questions on corruption. Now let Shri Rahul Gandhi, who had promised zero tolerance on corruption, answer why this is being accommodated,” BJP leader Nirmala Sitharaman said.
Defending the decision, Congress spokesperson Ajay Maken said, “No court or Election Commission has barred Ashok Chavan from contesting polls. His case is different from that of Suresh Kalmadi. While Kalmadi has been chargesheeted, court has not taken cognisance of the case against Chavan”.
The political observers are saying that the decision to give ticket to Ashok Chavan could hurt Rahul Gandhi’s personal image. His decision to give tickets to other taineted leaders like Pawan Kumar Bansal and Subodh Kant Sahay has already raising several questions on his intentions.
