The accused Uber taxi driver, Shiv Kumar Yadav, who was arrested in Mathura on Sunday for allegedly raping a 25-year-old woman passenger in Delhi, was reportedly went to jail for raping another woman in 2011. He was released after spending seven months in Tihar jail. It was shocking to know that his criminal record was not checked by Uber when he was hired.
“We have arrested the accused in the cab case from Mathura and he has been brought to Delhi,” DCP North Madhur Verma said.
The Delhi police to produce 32-year-old Shiv Kumar Yadav in a Delhi court today.
Under fire, Uber meanwhile, tried to damage control and said they would fully cooperate with the police in the investigation.
“Our team immediately provided the local authorities with all relevant details. Uber exclusively partners with registered for-hire drivers who have undergone the commercial licensing process, hold government issued IDs, state-issued permits, and carry full commercial insurance. Uber also has a GPS trace and record of all trips that occur on the platform. This information has been shared with the authorities. We will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement officials,” Uber said in a statement.
The victim, a finance company executive in Gurgaon, has said in her police complaint that she fell asleep in the Uber cab on Friday night and woke up to find it parked at a desolate spot and then Yadav allegedly raped her.
