The Ministry of Defence has appointed Admiral RK Dhowan as India’s new navy chief. His appointment raises several controversies including breakage of line of seniority. As per the norm, Admiral RK Dhowan’s senior, Vice-Admiral Shekhar Sinha should have been appointed as the new naval chief of India.
The former navy chief Admiral Devendra Joshi resigned in August last year citing moral responsibility following series of accidents in navy including INS Sindhuratna explosion.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Admiral Dhowan was commissioned January 1, 1975. He is a navigation and direction specialist. He has commanded frontline warships like INS Khukri, INS Ranjit, INS Delhi in his 40 years of eventful career. He commanded the Eastern Fleet, as Flag-Officer-Commanding of the Eastern fleet, and was Chief of Staff at the Headquarters of the Eastern Naval Command.
