According to the Indian Railways, world’s highest rail bridge at 359 meter across river Chenab in Jammu and Kashmir will be completed by year 2016.
“We plan to complete it by December 2016, a year before the entire Udhampur-Baramulla stretch is commissioned,” CAO of Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project, B D Garg told reporters.
This fascinated, arch-shaped rail bridge will connect Baramulla and Srinagar to Jammu via Udhampur-Katra-Qazigund region. It will allow passengers to cover the route in just seven hours.
The 1,315-m-long bridge, which is the five times height of Qutab Minar, will also survive blast and seismic activities.
Speaking on the safety issue Mr. Garg said, “If one of the columns gives way, the deck would not collapse. It would be possible to restore the bridge for normal operation after carrying out required repairs.”
The train could pass the bridge at speed of 30 kmph.
