The Supreme Court today rejected the bail plea of founder and former editor-in-chief of Tehelka, Tarun Tejpal in sexual assault case. Tejpal has been charged with allegedly raping a female colleague during a fest in Goa last year.
The Apex court has also issued a notice to the Goa government asking it to explain why Tejpal should not be given bail.
After his bail plea was rejected in Goa bench of the Bombay HC earlier on March 14, Tejpal sought bail plea in SC on April 10,on the ground that “the trial will take considerable time to conclude” as 152 prosecution witnesses have to be cross examined by the court.
Tejpal also mentioned his mother’s critical illness in his plea for which he has been previously allowed to visit her twice.
Tejpal is in jail since November 30 last year. He is currently in judicial remand and lodged at Sada sub-jail in Goa.
