The fast-track court will pronounce its sentence on Delhi Gang Rape Case on Friday. On Tuesday it had convicted all 4 four persons, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh Singh of rape and murder of a 23-year-old paramedical girl who was gang raped by 6 men on December 16, 2012 on a moving bus in Delhi. The co-accused of the case, Ram Singh committed suicide in Tihar Jail and another minor, a co-accused is currently serving 3 years in juvenile correction facility.
The argument on sentences began in the morning with the prosecution sought death penalty for all four accused in this rarest of rare” case.
“The crime is not only grotesque and diabolic in nature but the barbaric behaviour of the convicts was of the highest kind. Maximum sentence has to be given as the court should see that they have raped and killed a helpless girl, even as she pleaded for her life,” the prosecutor said.
The defence lawyers seek a lighter punishment for the convicts, saying death penalty is not appropriate in this case.
Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, AP Singh, the lawyer for convicts Vinay and Akshay said, “God gives life and he alone can take it and not man-made courts.”
Additional sessions judge Yogesh Khanna reserved the punishment order and will disclose it on coming Friday.
