A big blow to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aim to free India from scam and reduces criminality in politics.
The Supreme Court today said that it cannot fast-track pending criminal cases against MPs as they are not special class.
The apex court today said that categories like women and senior citizens in criminal trails needs to be expedited.
The SC also raised concern in delay in train in criminal cases.
“Pendency of criminal cases for 10 years does not augur well for democracy,” the SC bench said.
PM Narendra Modi had earlier asked MPs to knock Supreme Court to complete trials of pending cases against MPs within a year.
“Would it not be better if the guilty are punished? Then every time you file an affidavit you don’t have to put down a case that some NGO will highlight as a pending criminal investigation,” Modi had said in Rajya Sabha.
“When parties see seats being rendered empty, they will get the message… In five years, Parliament will be taint free. The experiment can then be taken to assemblies and municipalities,” Modi added.
