At least nine people were killed as fire broke out at the speeding Mumbai-Dehradun Express near Thane on Wednesday morning.
The incident took place around 2.30 am near Dahanu town in Thane, when a fire is believed to have exploded in S-3 coach and quickly spread to two other bogies, burning nine passengers including a woman alive.
“The fire was noticed on the speeding train by a level-crossing gateman who alerted the guard. The guard informed the driver and the train was stopped. The gateman did a commendable job and averted a major disaster,” a Western Railway spokesperson said.
The fire was brought under control shortly after and the relief operations started. The injured have been taken to the nearby hospitals in Dahanu and Gholwad.
