The main accused in the multimillion dollar Bofors scandal, Ottavio Quattrocchi died in Milan on Friday due to massive heart-attack. He was 74.
Italian businessman Quattrocchi’s name came in $285 million Bofors gun deal between the Indian government and the Swedish firm in 1986 where Quattrocchi, the family friend of Gandhi’s, said to be the beneficiary along with then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The allegations, however, were never proved by various inquiry commissions.
Ghost of Bofors scam haunt Congress for the last 27 years, hopefully it will now ends with Quattrocchi’s death. Congress lost severely in 1989 following the massive bribery allegations against Gandhi family. Quattrocchi left India forever in 1993 and was never been arrested.
In 2011 CBI withdrawn case against Quattrocchi as there was no evidence against him.
“(the CBI)spending through the nose for about 21 years, has not been able to put forward legally sustainable evidence with regard to conspiracy in the matter. Further, in the case of Mr. Quattrocchi, as against the alleged kickback of Rs. 64 crore he received, the CBI had by 2005 already spent around Rs. 250 crore on the investigation, which is sheer wastage of public money,” court observed while discharging his name from the case.
During his order, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vinod Yadav said, “Woh afsana jisse anjaam tak laana na ho mumkin, usse ek khoobsurat mod dekhar chhodna hi achha.” (“A story that cannot be taken to a logical end; it is better to leave it at a good juncture.”)
