Maharashtra Leads in Domestic Violence Cases in India

A recent study shows that Maharashtra has the highest number of registered domestic violence cases in 2010-11 in the country followed by Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Maharashtra registered  2,433 cases, while Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka reported 1,174 and 1,013 cases. Madhya Pradesh police has registered 882 domestic violence cases, followed by Kerala with 631 cases.

The study was conducted by the Lawyers Collective Women’s Rights Initiative in collaboration with the International Centre for Research on Women and UN Women in 16 states in India. Over 7,500 cases were analyzed. Most complaints came from the married women followed by divorced and widows.

The shocking findings reveal that the pattern of violence and abuses are very common across the states. Physical brutality, emotional and verbal and economic al abuse were the most common form of domestic violence these Women had experienced.

In order to protect women from the domestic violence and gender discrimination India passed a strong ‘Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act’ in 2005.

About Sprightly Spirit

“I dare do all that may become a man. Who dares more is none”. And all, may be. It may be the vigor. Or the spirit. Or the courage to avoid being “politically correct” or bent. And, ban all averse with immaculate overture of graciously fathomable words firm in views. Subtle. Justifying the undying conscience. Values. Knowledge. And, dares to stay true. True to own. True to the world. And, to the words. With a dream in eyes it exists. In you. In me. In all. The sprite that never shies away. The spirit that never dies!
