A recent study shows that Maharashtra has the highest number of registered domestic violence cases in 2010-11 in the country followed by Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Maharashtra registered 2,433 cases, while Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka reported 1,174 and 1,013 cases. Madhya Pradesh police has registered 882 domestic violence cases, followed by Kerala with 631 cases.
The study was conducted by the Lawyers Collective Women’s Rights Initiative in collaboration with the International Centre for Research on Women and UN Women in 16 states in India. Over 7,500 cases were analyzed. Most complaints came from the married women followed by divorced and widows.
The shocking findings reveal that the pattern of violence and abuses are very common across the states. Physical brutality, emotional and verbal and economic al abuse were the most common form of domestic violence these Women had experienced.
In order to protect women from the domestic violence and gender discrimination India passed a strong ‘Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act’ in 2005.
