The government has withdrawn its controversial decision of putting English essay paper of 100 marks in the 2013 Civil Services Main Examination after nationwide protest.
Like always the main exam will have two qualifying papers – one in regional language and one in English.
“The English component (of 100 marks) from the Essay Paper will be dropped and the status quo ante of two qualifying papers of 300 marks each in any modern Indian language and in English — shall be restored,” Minister of State for PMO V Narayanasamy told in Lok Sabha.
On March 5 notification by the Union Public Service Commission stated that efficiency in English language will be a primary requirement for candidates of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).
However protests erupted across India and many students said that inserted an additional part of English paper means sidelining the regional languages as well as barring students of rural areas to compete.
