Death Sentence for Delhi rapists

Death for Delhi rapists

A special court pronounced death sentence for all four convicted in Delhi gang rape case. The justice has been delivered after 9 months since the incident took place on 16th December last year when a 23-year-old paramedic student was brutally raped in a moving bus in New Delhi by 6 men.

Death Sentence for Delhi rapistsRam Singh, the co-rapist committed suicide in Tihar jail and another minor is currently serving his 3-year term in juvenile detention centre.

While pronouncing the death sentence for Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Kumar Singh, the judge, Yogesh Khanna said, “Besides discussing others offences, I straightaway come to section 302 (murder) of IPC. This falls under inhuman nature of the convicts and the gravity of offence they committed cannot be tolerated. Death sentence is given to all the four convicts.”

“Court cannot turn a blind eye to such a gruesome act,” the judge said, adding “When crime against women is rising on day-to-day basis, so, at this point in time court cannot keep its eye shut.”

“There should be exemplary punishment in view of the unparalleled brutality with which the victim was gang raped and murdered, as the case falls under the rarest of rare category. All be given death. This is a time when serious crime against a woman has come to the fore and now its judiciary’s responsibility to instill confidence among the women,” the order said in this rarest of rare case.

The girls family said they are happy with the judgment and thank judge, police media and people for their support.
“Justice has been done. I want to thank everyone. I am very happy with the verdict,” said the father.

“I thank everyone for their support. Justice has been given. Our fight is not over. We will always stand with the people in their fight against crimes against women,” the mother said.

Defence lawyer said that they will move to High Court against the order and alleged that the verdict id politically influenced.

Reacting to the verdict the Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said, “It passes on the message that if you commit this crime, this is the punishment you will get,”

Ruling out the political pressure on the judge, Mr. Shinde said, “Judicial authority follows the law, not political pressure. Justice has been given to the braveheart,”

The 16th December incident forced government to strengthen the law on violence against women in the country following outrage and protests across India.
