‘De-recognised’ students’ union demand apology from IIT Madras dean

Members of the Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle (APSC), the body representing the student wing of IIT-Madras, whose de-recognition for allegedly violating code of conduct has sparked off a row, on Tuesday as protests were carried out inside the campus that demanded an urgent recognition and apology from the Dean himself for his action against them.

The members staged a placard-holding protest inside the premises in the capital Chennai, even as media was not allowed entry to cover the agitation. The angry mob was seen raising slogans against the management of IIT-Madras, demanding that their study circle be duly recognised and the Dean apologise for de-recognising and discriminating with it. Journalists and other media personnel who made repeated requests to cover the protest were not allowed entry inside and were seen arguing with the police.

The management meanwhile maintained is stand that “as per the guidelines in force, student bodies cannot use the name of IIT-Madras or its official entities in any capacity to publicise their activities or garner support without official permission.”
