Under pressure Aam Aadmi Party leader Kumar Viswas has finally apologised for his ‘sexist’ remarks against Kerala nurses.
“It has come to my knowledge that an old video-clip of one of my kavi sammelans has hurt the feelings of many of my friends residing in Kerala. I must say that I don’t appreciate any discrimination based on religion, region, gender, caste or creed. I never tried to intentionally hurt the sentiments of anyone”, he stated on Wednesady.
An old video of Kumar Viswas in which he was calling Kerala nurses ‘dark skinned’ has been surfacing on social networking site and sparked huge controversy in the country.
Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy had demanded an apology from Kumar Viswas for his remarks.
“It is most unfortunate that the Aam Aadmi Party is tightlipped regarding the derogatory remarks on Malayalee nurses,” Oommen Chandy had said.
Defending Viswas Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that he had said it light-heartedly.
“Kumar had told me that he goes for public events as a poet and says many things light-heartedly. But he had apologised for this comment. It is an old case,” said Arvind Kejriwal.
Earlier in the day Kumar Vishwas had said his remarks were scripted and he enjoyed poetic license. He even tried to defend himself by saying that as Raj Babbar or Shatrughan Sinha are not apologised for the rapes they committed in their films, he also should not apologized for whatever was saying in jokes. But women groups are furious over Vishwas’ comments.
