The Maharashtra police on Wednesday arrested a right wing group activist in rationalist Govind Pansare’s assassination case. In a substantial development in the case, the police arrested Sameer Gaikwad, an activist associated with right wing group Sanatan Sanstha. Gaikwad (32) reportedly runs a mobile repair shop apart from being associated with the rightwing group.
The arrest was made at around 4:30am from his residence in Sangli, Maharashtra. He was then produced in a local court which has remanded him for seven-days police custody. The Kolhapur district bar association decided not to defend the attacker; hence Gaikwad currently presented himself before the judge, The Times of India reported.
Gaikwad’s arrest comes months after Govind Pansare, a prominent CPI activist was shot, while he and his wife were out on a walk. Pansare, who was in a critical state was flown to Mumbai for treatment where he had breathed his last. His wife, who was shot at too, later recuperated.
