On Tuesday night all eyes were set in the parliament where our political leaders were debating and shaping the anticipated anti-corruption law ‘The Lokpal’. While the Lok Sabha passed the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill by a simple majority but lost out to make it a constitutional body. UPA 2 has faced huge embarrassment when its own ally and 25 of its own MPs did not voted in favour of Rahul Gandhi’s idea of making Lokpal a constitutional Body.
To make the Lokpal a ‘constitutional body’ it would required 2/3rd majority and here the Government fell short and all credit goes to disastrous floor management by the top congress leaders. The constitutional amendment bill defeated due to lack of 2/3rd majority.
It is ironical that when Anna Hazare is struggling to get the number in form of crowds in the MMRDA ground, his main target Congress also could not collect the magic ‘number’ figure and faced huge set back.
While UPA had the majority in the Lok Sabha, which ensured the bills to be passed, but failed to get the support from Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samajwadi Party to make it 2/3rd. These two parties along with Left had walked-out.
