A massive earthquake of 6.6 magnitude hits China’s southwestern province of Sichuan on Saturday morning, killing at least 100 and injured over 600. The earthquake reminds 2008’s massive tremor in which almost 80,000 were killed.
Today’s earthquake struck near the city of Ya’an around 8:00 am.
Initially the US Geological Survey put the magnitude at 7, but later scaled down.
“There are mountains on all sides, it is very easy to trigger mudslides and very dangerous,” one user wrote on popular Sina Weibo, China’s version of Twitter.
The rescue operations have been started. According to Xinhua news agency, 2,000 troops were being sent to the area.
