The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) which suffered a crushing defeat in the last elections in 2009, has won 294 seats while its ally New Komeito has got 31 seats in the latest elections to the Diet.
The party’s leader Shinzo Abe (58) is expected to be elected as Japan’s Prime Minister in a special session of the Diet on 26th December 2012. He was the Prime Minister of Japan for a year during 2006-2007.
The two-thirds majority held by the party and its ally New Komeito in the House of Representatives (the Lower House of Diet) having 480 sears, will give them the capacity to overrule any decision of the House of Councillors (the Upper House of Diet).
The ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) has suffered a massive defeat – losing 173 seats in this election; it has won 57 seats in the lower house compared with the 230 seats it has held in the present House. Yoshihiko Noda, the party’s leader and present Prime Minister, has announced that he would resign as the party’s leader holding himself responsible for the severe defeat of the party.
The recently established Japan Restoration Party won 54 seats and the Tomorrow Party of Japan won nine seats.
