Afghanistan on Friday said they cannot meet US demand of signing a key security until after next year’s presidential election. Washington has earlier asked Afghanistan to sign the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) at the earliest.
President Hamid Karzai had Afghanistan could only sign the deal “when our elections are conducted, correctly and with dignity”.
Karzai’s spokesman Aimal Faizi told AFP, “Security, peace and good elections are key to the signing of the BSA.”
“Let’s wait and see what will the loya jirga decide on the document. If approved, as the president said, it will be signed after elections,” he added.
If Afghanistan not signs the agreement this year then no US troops can be present there in Aghanistan in 2014.
NATO is also to pull out its 75,000 troops next year from Afghanistan after the election.
