According to the very latest information, an Iron Dome just intercepted seven rockets above Ashkelon. Several rockets too were fired from Lebanon at Israel, claimed the IDF. A rocket hit an open space and soon the IDF responded by the artillery fire.
The UN news centre reported that Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today warned the United Nations Security Council of the “risk of an all-out escalation in Israel and Gaza” and made an urgent appeal for maximum restraint, saying his “paramount concern is the safety and well-being of all civilians, no matter where they are.”
“Today, we face the risk of an all-out escalation in Israel and Gaza, with the threat of a ground offensive still palpable – and preventable only if Hamas stops rocket firing,” the Secretary-General told the urgently-called meeting of the Security Council Thursday morning on the Middle East, which he told reporters yesterday that he had requested.
The Secretary-General said over the past several days, the Palestinian factions Hamas and Islamic Jihad have fired more than 550 rockets and mortars from Gaza into Israel, and the Israeli Defence Forces have launched more than 500 airstrikes on Gaza.
“It is now more urgent than ever to try to find common ground for a return to calm and a cease-fire understanding,” he said.
“Once again civilians are paying the price for the continuation of conflict,” Mr. Ban said. “My paramount concern is the safety and well-being of all civilians, no matter where they are. It pains me – and it should pain us all – to be reliving circumstances that are all too reminiscent of the two most recent wars in Gaza.”
- Lives at stake.
Around 150 people have lost their lives as the attacks between Israel and Gaza are refusing to stop. According to an Associated Press (AP) report, Israel on Saturday widened its range of Gaza bombing targets to civilian institutions with suspected Hamas ties and announced it would hit northern Gaza with great force to prevent rocket attacks from there on Israel.
Since this claim of Israel, residents living in Northern Gaza have started vacating the region. Some citizens of Gaza having dual citizenship too are leaving the country and moving to a safer place.
Even as this goes on, the rocket launches and attacks between the two countries has not yet come to a halt. According to IDF, Hamas terrorists fixed over 971 rockets at Israel in past six days.
A rocket fired from Gaza hit electricity infrastructure, according to the IDF, that supplied power to Gaza, cutting power to about 70,000 people in Gaza. An aerial drone from Gaza had earlier infiltrated Israel after which the IDF shot it down above Ashdod using Patriot missile.
Twitter is buzzing with people from across the globe putting up their opinion and views on these severe crisis. People from Israel and Gaza too are sharing ground images and conditions through twitter. Some disturbing images too are making rounds on twitter.
Nalan Al Sarraj tweeted, “The building next to mine got hit! I have a panic attack! I saw the injuries in the streets! Smoke and fire everywhere. #Gaza #GazaUnderAttack.”
Journalist Mohammed Omer tweeted, “Each time an airstrike hit, everything around me starts to shake except my believe this can’t continue forever.”
