The ongoing controversy regarding the web censorship in India intensify when technology giant Google has clearly told that it is not possible for them to monitor everything on its website.
Google, Youtube, Facebook, Orkut, Yahoo are among 21 companies who are charged with hosting obscene and objectionable content on website.
Delhi based Vinay Rai had filed a petition citing how obscene depictions of Hindu deities, the Prophet Mohammed and Jesus Christ are featured on these websites. The Lower court in Delhi has summoned executives from all 21 companies to be present in the court on March 13 to give their explanation on the alleged charges.
Meanwhile companies have challenged the summons in the high court. The next hearing is scheduled on February 2.
Google’s chief business officer Nikesh Arora told media, “I’m hoping there will be a balanced debate around it and eventually the right thing would happen. “We cannot censor the Web. We cannot censor the ability of people to express themselves around the world.” “You are asking not just censor the Web in India, you are asking to censor the entire world wide web. The Web has no borders. I think the idea of censoring everything and pre- clearing everything is going to fundamentally, sort of, taint the growth of the Indian economy in India and vis-a-vis the world.” He added.
