New Delhi: Kanhaiya Kumar, the president of Jawaharlal Nehru University was on Monday, granted an interim bail by the Delhi High Court on the personal bail bond of Rs 10,000 and a surety of like amount. In its judgement, the Delhi High Court mentioned clearly that a university faculty member has to stand as surety for Kanhaiya.
The High Court’s decision was welcomed by the university administration, which called it a “good news”, hoping for normalcy to return within its premises, post this judgement.
Kumar, in the Court, admitted his presence at the location where anti-India slogans were being raised, however, denied being a part of it or raising the slogans himself. According to PTI, the court said Delhi Police Special Cell, which has taken over the investigation, has to ascertain whether Kanhaiya’s February 11 speech contained his original thoughts and faith in the Constitution and nationalist approach, or the speech was to create a “safety gear for himself” for the February 9 incident.
“At this stage, a detailed examination of the evidence is to be avoided while considering question of bail, to ensure that there is no prejudging and no prejudice, a brief examination for satisfying about the existence or otherwise of a prima facie case is necessary,” the judge said, as quoted by the PTI.
“My son not a terrorist”
Post the judgement of the Delhi High Court, Kanhaiya Kumar’s mother said that her son was not a terrorist and that the entire world would soon be knowing that. His mother, Meena Devi, was quoted by The Times Of India as saying, “My son is not a terrorist and the world will know it soon. I have faith in him, he will fight the opponents who have framed him. For every mother her child is great, if he has committed mistake punish him but do not call him a terrorist. He is not one, he never will be.”
