The anger among the common citizens across the country increasing as the Kanpur-based cartoonist Aseem Trivedi arrested on charges of sedition for insulting national symbols through his cartoons.
The Trivedi cartoon saga sparks outrage and protests across India. The activists and legal experts come out heavily on the Maharashtra government and criticize strongly. A defiant Trivedi in protest refused to hire a lawyer.
Bow to pressure, the police produced him in the metropolitan magistrate’s court on Monday and said the investigations were over and Trivedi can apply for bail. However Trivedi stick to his stand and said that he will not apply for bail till the sedition charges are dropped. the Magistrate sent Trivedi to judicial custody till September 24.
25-year-old of Aseem Trivedi, an Anna Hazare’s supporter, is an active member of India against corruption. Aseem was arrested on Saturday by the BKC (Bandr Kurla Complex) police under 124A of the Indian Penal Code for posting ‘ugly and obscene’ content on his website.
Outside the court, Trivedi said, “I am a terrorist if Gandhi and Azad were terrorists. Bharat Mata is us. Insulting us is insulting Bharat Mata. I am proud of what I did, will continue it. Anna says going to jail for the country is nothing bad, and I am doing this for my country.”
Some of the examples of the cartoons which are making news are: portray of the national emblem as comprising wolves in place of lions and the slogan Bhrashtameva Jayate in place of Satyameva Jayate.
This is a big blow to the freedom of speech. If the country is running by the bunch of cartoons, then we can surely expect many more Aseem Trivedi incidents in near future.
